“It’s a classic bag for cool girls,” asserts Loewe’s Stuart Vevers of the beautifully timeless Amazona style, which was first introduced into the Loewe design lexicon in 1975. Spain was emerging from the patriarchal Franco era and the Amazona, like the supple, roomy Hermès Birkin, became a symbol of liberation and, indeed, freedom for a generation of women desiring to break free from conservative social hierarchies as well as the strictures of skirt suits and structured bags.

With a name that symbolised female strength and sexual equality, the bag offered breezy convenience as well as fashion status to newly independent women. And the design, with its capacious, modern oblong shape and oval handles has, like any true object of desire, resisted many fashion tides to become a timeless classic. Style icons including Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Angelina Jolie adore the Amazona, as do legions of Loewe fans.

But how to keep a classic relevant? Vevers has reinvented the Amazona in numerous guises since first discovering it in the Loewe archive in 2009. He has lightened the hardware, reworked the colourways and played with leathers, reprising the design for today. What Vevers has created for Luxup is a unique series of Amazona bags in exotic ostrich skin in a range of delightfully seductive colours: bags for life. In this interview, filmed in Stuart Vevers’ Madrid home, Loewe’s designer talks about that ingenious process and the allure of the Amazona.
