OH if we could wear couture every day, how we would long for it to be Valentino couture. So beautiful, so elegant but never too girly, it ticks the boxes for all of our fashion desires.

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, the co-creative directors who have been helming the legendary label since 2008 following Mr Valentino's retirement, are doing a wonderful job at the house – creating collections that are calm and understated, beautiful and rich. And that’s exactly what they did again today for their autumn/winter 2012-13 couture collection.

They took items – such as jumpsuits and capes - that could have been challenging in the context of couture and managed to make them look beautiful: see the stunning hand-painted Scarlett O’Hara-style dress, cinched at the waist, that was accompanied by a cascading floor-length cape in a ravishing print of birds and trees; or the pink jumpsuit with a slash-neck and a bronze antique finish.

“It was beautiful and rich and went from jet black and navy to that really dusty pink we’ve been seeing a lot of,” said Vogue fashion director Lucinda Chambers.

Silhouettes were lean even when skirts splayed out. It was the definition of the waist in every outfit that did it. Everything was considered.

Hair was pulled back and there was a distinct lack of jewellery – all of which contributed to the overall stark prettiness.
